[Este é um texto do Fernando Vilarinho, ex-membro do "Segundo Andamento", sobre o concurso da RTP "Grandes Portugueses". Concordo em 90% com o que aqui está escrito, sobretudo no que se refere ao inexplicável esquecimento de Fernão Magalhães. Ao ler os argumentos do Fernando é impossível não sentir indignação, mesmo que se discorde em alguns pontos, como é o meu caso.]
Tenho ignorado a big tretice dos “Grandes Portugueses”.Apenas pelo facto de ser promovido por um canal público de televisão consultei há uns 3 meses o website apenas para me inteirar dos modos de votação. Como referi na altura, sem dúvida uma boa ideia para uma caça aos euros. Como tal nunca participei.
Portugal, no momento, regista quase 10 milhões de pessoas com nacionalidade portuguesa a viver ‘cá dentro’, aos quais se podem somar perto de dois milhões pelo mundo fora (efectivamente portugueses). Estima-se (e números por baixo) que desde 1143 já tenham vivido, pelo menos, mais de 100 milhões de portugueses.
Também, como sabemos, Portugal tem perto de nove séculos de existência e mesmo povos anteriores à criação de Portugal, como por exemplo os lusos, do qual sobressai Viriato, são considerados portugueses.
A RTP (canal um e dois) continua a receber (ao contrários do que algumas pessoas pensam) dinheiros públicos e usa-os em muitas situações, como nesta, para insultar os Portugueses e a sua História.
Hoje regressei ao website e fui consultar a dita lista da final (ou quase final). Primeiro tenho algumas dúvidas se o suposto Júri não tenha manipulado os resultados para minorar as idiotices das escolhas. E só não tenho mais dúvidas porque este concurso é como o futebol luso. Vive sobretudo da polémica, originada de modo natural ou (principalmente) artificial, e quanto mais aberrante for, melhor. Mais €€ rende.
No total de 100 escolhas, constate-se que 65 Pessoas são do século XX (e do agora XXI) ou viveram a maior parte da sua vida no século XX. Ou seja, 2/3 das escolhas são do último século. Por esta votação só se pode concluir que nos oitos séculos anteriores os lusos eram quase todos um ‘bando de broncos’, que andavam aí por andar.
Depois entre os mais de 100 milhões de portugueses nas escolhas aparecerem entre os 20 primeiros figuras como Salgueiro Maia, Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa, João Ferreira Annes de Almeida ou José Mourinho ; ou entre os 50 primeiros personalidades como Fernando Nobre (25º), Zeca Afonso (29º), Marcello Caetano (31º), Florbela Espanca Maria de Lurdes Pintasilgo, Catarina Eufémia, José Sócrates ou Ruy de Carvalho; e entre os 100 primeiros pessoas como Alberto João Jardim, Vasco Gonçalves (54º), Maria do Carmo Seabra, Mariza, António Teixeira Rebelo, Vítor Baía, Otelo Saraiva de Carvalho, Cristiano Ronaldo, Herman José, Ricardo Araújo Pereira, Hélio Pestana ou António Variações ; que são escolhas sem o mínimo de fundamento (e para ser eufemista).
Devemos aos milhões de portugueses anónimos que morreram ao longo dos séculos a remar ou a tratar das caravelas; na pesca marítima, nas minas de carvão, urânio ou volfrâmio; a trabalhar nos campos de arroz, trigo ou batata; nas batalhas e guerras (quase todas elas estúpidas, que fizemos e por vez comandadas por loucos assassinos como o D. Sebastião) nas inúmeras fomes e epidemias que sobrevieram, nas porfias pelos ideais de justiça, de liberdade, de democracia, de igualdade de acesso e oportunidades ; nos inúmeros desastres e doenças que poderiam ser evitados ou minorados; na edificação de infraestruturas e equipamentos, etc, etc ; mais do que outrem o que este país conseguiu atingir de positivo. Mas já no século 21 surge uma televisão pública que simplesmente os insulta e os avilta de modo cruel e frio, vendida como Judas por uns dinheiros.
Os doutos portugueses que viajam na actualidade pelas setes partidas do mundo entre Punta Cana, Fortaleza, Phuket, Varadero e Badajoz, pelo menos podiam saber que existe um português cujo notalibilidade (celebridade) a nível mundial sobressai largamente de todos os outros. Refiro-me aquele navegador português cujo nome está impresso em milhões de manuais de estudo da maior parte dos países do mundo, desde a China à Argentina, passando pela África do Sul ou Rússia: Fernão de Magalhães.
Na minha percepção Magalhães não é o português mais proeminente de sempre. No meu entendimento será Camões. Outros dirão que é o Henrique, o Navegador (aceito a sua opinião) outros dirão D. João II (aí tenho mais reticências, mas aceitarei na mesma). Contudo, reportando apenas ao conhecimento da sua existência pelo mundo fora, sem dúvida, Magalhães é a figura de proa destacadíssima, e continuará a sê-lo certamente durante muitos séculos adiante.
Numa economia e sociedade global a palavra Magalhães é um dos epítetos que melhor simboliza essa globalidade. O seu nome tem sido ao longo do tempo um dos mais eleitos por centenas de projectos, de estruturas, de empresas, de eventos, pretendendo-se transmitir esse sentido de globalidade, de atingir novos mundos, novos mercados, de ir mais além do que alguém jamais foi…
Vejamos alguns casos:

* A Província de Magalhães (território que representa 151% do território português), no Chile.
* As Nuvens de Magalhães, duas das mais importantes galáxias, devido à elevada proximidade da Via Láctea.
* O Estreito de Magalhães na América do Sul

Estruturas e equipamentos:
* A importante Missão/Sonda Magalhães da NASA a Vénus.
* O "Telescópio Gigante Magalhães", no Chile, que terá o dobro da dimensão do actual maior do mundo. Só estará completamente operacional em 2016. Mas a partir de 2008 já terá algumas partes operacionais.
* O actual telescópio Magalhães no Chile, um dos 10 maiores do mundo
* O Observatório Espacial Magalhães, na Austrália
* …
Empresas:
* "Magellan Midstream Partners", uma das maiores multinacionais de distribuição de energia (petróleo, gás natural, electricidade, carvão, etc.)
* "Magellan Aerospace", uma das maiores empresas do mundo no domínio aeroespacial.
* "Magellan Health Services", uma das três maiores empresas dos EUA na área da Medicina e Saúde.

Diversos clubes de futebol, náutica, beisebol, pelo mundo fora.

Por outro lado, a viagem de Magalhães deu a conhecer ao mundo muitos novos animais como o lama, o condor andino, a vicuna, a alpaca, etc, novas plantas, novas regiões, mares, climas, ecossistemas.
Mas basta observar o artigo sobre Fernão de Magalhães na Wikipedia. É o artigo sobre um Português com mais versões linguísticas (ex. 4 vezes superior a Camões, ou 3x superior a Salazar).
O nome Magalhães tornou-se mais que nunca um dos principais sinónimos, epítetos, de globalidade, num mundo cada vez mais global. Mas em Portugal tem existido grande empenho em tentar apagar o seu nome da nossa história, e depois os tugas estão mais interessadas em tornar à força Colombo português ou irem passear para a Índia, agora que aqui faz um friozinho.
Há, sim! Esqueci-me que em 1998 Portugal arranjou de uma assentada três estruturas para compensar o homem a quem o mundo entretanto quase esqueceu: Vasco da Gama. O centro comercial e uma torre (que só serve para alojar um restaurante para endinheirados) quase tão alta como a ponte homónima. Vasco da Gama é também o nome da maior cidade de Goa, igualmente designado por portugueses. Existem ainda dois clubes de futebol no Brasil com o seu nome, fundados por portugueses: no Rio de Janeiro (no bairro de Vasco da Gama) e no estado do Acre.
Mas também arranjaram maneira de atribuir o nome de Vasco da Gama a um buraco, isto é uma cratera na Lua, com uns imensos … 80 quilometrozinhos de diâmetro. Como na Lua existem cerca de meio milhão de crateras, é sem dúvida uma grande honra! Pelo que sei ainda sobram cerca de duzentas mil crateras para serem baptizadas. Mais alguém gostaria de ter lá o seu nome?
Eu estou a ser algo mauzinho para o grande navegador que foi Vasco da Gama, mas a verdade é que a nível mundial os nomes Magalhães e Vasco da Gama são duas realidades com dois pesos totalmente diferentes. Até o Corto Maltese é muito mais conhecido lá por fora que Vasco da Gama.
Eu apenas escrevi este post pelo facto de uma televisão portuguesa que ainda recebe fundos do estado, usa-os para denegrir Portugal e ainda ganha €€ com isso. De seguida, "compram o silêncio" a algumas pessoas com mais visibilidade para revelar tal enormidade. Olhem, por exemplo, o “José Hermano Saraiva” recebeu no ofertório um 26º lugar nessa bizarra lista.
Mas votem, encham os bolsos desses “jobs for the boys”. É este o país que temos.

Bem vindo de volta. Como fui eu a levantar a lebre, digo-te que à parte o absurdo do Magalhães não estar na lista, não concordo com mais nada do que dizes.
1 - Não vejo onde é o concurso avilta, insulta ou desreipeita a nossa história. Em primeiro lugar, o formato e a forma de seleccionar as figuras são importados. E depois, se querias "respeitar" os grandes vultos da história, quem é que os escolheria? Uma comissão de historiadores? E achas que isso dava um programa de televisão?
2 - Quanto à qualidade das escolhas, é óbvio que o método de votação não pode produzir resultados "científicos". Quanto ao problema de mais de metade dos escolhidos serem nossos contemporâneos, é muito natural que assim seja, não porque os "antigos" portugueses não valiam nada, mas porque deles não haverá registo vivo como dos nossos. Mas parece-me que também tu estás a ser um bocado preconceituoso em relação a figuras actuais. Não achas que é muito mais fácil elogiar um D. João II, do qual (quase) só conhecemos os feitos, do que Mário Soares, a quem também sabemos dos defeitos?
Acerca disso penso que pessoas como Zeca Afonso, António Variações ou José Mourinho estão lá muito bem. Olha lá, existe alguma actividade mais competitiva que o futebol? Quantos treinadores de futebol há no mundo? O melhor de todos eles é português. Então se isto não é ser grande, o que é? Já houve algum outro treinador português, em qualquer modalidade, que o tenha conseguido?
É claro que a minha lista seria diferente. E também é claro que os meus parcos conhecimentos de história levar-me-iam a escolher pessoas da minha era, como Manoel de Oliveira (outra omissão criminosa), Francis Obikwelu ou Adolfo Luxúria Canibal. Mas isto sou eu.
3 - Voltando um bocadinho atrás. Se achas que as escolhas que os espectadores fizeram desreipeitam a História, que dirão os ingleses? É que Diana ficou à frente de Darwin, Newton e Shakespeare!!!
4 - Então achaste mal aparecer Marcello Caetano, mas não mencionas Salazar? hmmmm.....
P.S. O facto de ter escrito "desrespeito" incorrectamente duas vezes não quer dizer que não saiba escrever "desrespeito". Os dedos fogem...

Vou responder ao teu comentário mas mais para esclarecer algumas coisas que não referi no post
a) só pedi para fazerem um link a um post que coloquei noutro lugar. Nunca tive a intenção que fosse postado aqui.
b) Eu sou contra a realização de rankings deste género. Vamos cair na real. Fazer rankings dos maiores portugueses, chineses ou lá o que seja, é de um primitividade e de uma infantilidade a toda a prova. Depois o método usado é um insulto (e se outras nações já fizeram parvoíces iguais, isso valida ou serve de desculpa para se fazer cá dentro? por acaso até na altura escrevi sobre o trengada dos “Best of Britons” no fórum Murmurs, em 2002. A BBC foi pioneira e viu-se que deu barraca e copiar tal modelo ainda é + reprovável). E é um insulto pois para mim o dinheiro (do trabalho) dos contribuintes que a RTP recebe já que infelizmente não é usado para programas com alguma qualidade (tb devia transmitir alguns no canal 1), não aceito que seja usado para programas que contribuam para reescrever, de modo perverso, a História (sim pq a televisão tem um impacto imenso e influencia mais do que qq coisa milhões de portugueses). Se for a TVI ou a SIC que façam o querem pois o dinheiro é deles.
c) Como disse, antes de tudo acho infantil e grosseiro fazer-se rankings. Eu no meu post até acabei na infeliz tentação de referir algumas pessoas que acho sobressair bastante dos outros (como disse: Camões, o infante D. Henrique, D. João II) mas mesmo isso reconheço que é algo infantil.
d) Eu referi que certas pessoas surgiam na lista da RTP em posição de destaque excessivo sobretudo para mostrar o quão ridículo é fazer-se listas destas. Sem dúvida que estas pessoas (tirando o actor juvenil) tiveram/têm muita importância em Portugal e/ou no Mundo mas olhando década a década para trás encontro muitos e muitos portugueses que assumem igual ou maior grau de importância (mais uma vez sem criar rankings).
Estas pessoas são menos do que muitos dos que lá estão? Camilo C.Branco, Alexandre Herculano, Antero de Quental, Manoel de Oliveira, Agustina Bess-Luís, Fontes Pereira de Melo, Herberto Hélder, Garcia de Resende, Luis António Verney, Orlando Ribeiro, António Sérgio, Leite de Vasconcelos, Carolina Michaelis, Alexandre O´Neill, Gil Eanes, Leitão de Barros, Bento de Jesus Caraça, Passos Manuel, Garcia da Orta, F. Moura, Manuela Veloso, Irene Fonseca, todos no Carnegie Mellon; João Magueijo e Alcina Mendes - no Imperial College; Pedro Ferraz de Abreu – no MIT; J. Miguel Villas-Boas – na Univ. Califórnia – Berkeley; António Lima de Faria, Universidade de Lund, Suécia ; Francisco Lacerda – Univ. Estocolomo; Manuel Paiva – Univ. Bruxelas; etc, etc.
E ainda se posso acrescentar muitos e muitos mais se estiverem interessados
e) Eu acho que tb temos ter de percepção do verdadeira importância do futebol e outros desportos para a humanidade. Lá por ser algo que sobretudo nas últimas décadas atingiu gd projecção meditática, não obstem que o desenvolvimento da humanidade nas várias vertentes (e mesmo só reportando aos últimos séculos) tem sido escorado sobretudo por outras áreas (ciências, Ciências sociais e humanas, artes, etc.) e passava muito, muito bem sem o futebol. E na verdade o futebol nem 2 séculos tem, já as artes/escrita têm milhares e milhares de anos. E também em gd parte dos países mais desenvolvidos do mundo o futebol não é o desporto principal. E é muito fácil de antever (e já existem alguns estudos nesse sentido) que o futebol vai declinar bastante ao longo deste século (embora eset facto n tem nada ver com isto).
f) Eu só falei do Magalhães para aproveitar a deixa de se falar de portugueses importantes. Para mim Magalhães nem será do tal grupo restrito que citei de portugueses mais proeminentes, mas a verdade é que é o Português mais conhecido lá por fora e Portugal nesciamente não aproveita essa mais-valia, e pelo contrário tenta apagá-lo da história. Isto é de uma casmurrice infinda.
